Winter Wellness!

It seems like EVERYBODY is sick right now! This is the time of year when germs are easily spread and our immune systems fight hard to keep us healthy. The “winter blues” usually hit around now too and it’s hard to get motivated when it’s cold and dark outside…and Winter is far from over.

Tips for staying well this winter! (Mind and Body)

1. Get plenty of rest! This is a hard one for me…and probably a lot of you guys too. I try to shutdown and get in bed by 10 each night. This allows for about 7 hours of sleep. I know that my body functions better with proper rest, so I am trying to make this a priority during these long cold months.

2. Exercise! It’s no surprise that I LOVE to run and workout. No matter what time of year it is, my day goes better when I get in a sweaty workout. During the winter months, running outside is such a treat as the weather forces me inside way too often. All you need is the proper attire (I am loving my new Oiselle pants and Under Armour shirt) and some good friends!


When I can’t get outside, I love to take Body Pump classes and do at home workouts in my basement. I get most of my at home workouts from Julie and from YouTube. I love this one, this one, and this one!

3. Eat Healthy Meals! I love to eat healthy meals. I would much rather eat a salad or a big sweet potato topped with black beans, veggies, and avocado over a burger and fries anyday. Dessert is a different story…I eat it and I love it.


I really want to try some new healthy recipes this winter, like this one! I just found this great website, Aloha, that has a ton of delicious and fun recipes and I hope to try a few of them. 🙂

4. Laugh! Laughter is the best medicine, right?!?! Find the time each day to just sit back, relax, and have fun. It can be quality time with your family, an hour with a good book, or a visit to the spa, but find time each day to have some fun.

If you don’t take Body Pump regularly…

you will be sore every time. I took a class during lunch yesterday and my inner thighs and my chest/arms are really feeling it today. I definitely challenge myself each time and if I don’t go on a consistent basis, I am sore for days! In order to help my running and my overall strength, I’m trying to take classes twice a week from now on. 🙂
Rewind to breakfast yesterday. I had overnight oats with sliced bananas. You can make overnight oats a ton of different ways, but this is what I do.

Overnight Oats

1. Pour 1/2 cup of oatmeal into a container.
2. Add 1 cup of vanilla almond milk.
3. Sprinkle cinnamon on top.
4. Cover and leave in fridge overnight.
5. Add fruit and granola in the morning and enjoy!

I was famished by the time Body Pump was over (anybody else get super hungry after weight training?). I ate an almond butter and strawberry jam sandwich and a blueberry Chobani.


Later in the afternoon I snacked on two clementines and I ate yogurt covered raisins on my drive home from work. Snacks make the commute so much better!

On the way home I picked up Subway for dinner. I went with a turkey and ham salad and I had some pita chips on the side.

Annabelle finally fell asleep around 9:30 and I ate some “healthy” dessert while watching Dance Moms. Lucky for me she woke up right as I was getting into bed. Good thing she is so darn cute. 🙂

How many hours of sleep do you average per night? If I get 6 hours, I consider myself lucky.

“Healthy” Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake!

Here is my recipe for a great summertime dessert! NOTE: I’m not even sure I can call it a recipe because it’s so easy to make. 🙂

1 container of light cool whip
Fat free pudding (4 snack containers)
Angel food cake
Strawberries (one container)

1. Slice strawberries into small pieces and set aside.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the pudding and the cool whip. NOTE: make sure to leave a little bit of cool whip to top the dessert with.

3. Slice the angel food cake into small pieces.

4. Now that everything is ready, start layering!

– Angel food cake
– chocolate mixture
– strawberries

Repeat until you have 3 layers.

5. Top with remaining cool whip and strawberries.

6. Let chill in the fridge for at least an hour.

Trust me, you will love this dessert and you don’t have to feel too guilty when you eat the whole thing yourself. FYI…I’ve used funfetti cake in place of the angel food cake and that was amazing as well. 🙂
