Marathon Training Monday III: #MTM

Another week of training in the books!

7 easy miles

Strength Training: Body Pump

5.5 mile track workout (3 sets of 2 x 1200m with rest intervals in between)

Our 1200 times:

I missed body pump class, so I road the bike for 20 minutes and then did my own body pump-like workout (squats, chest presses, clean and presses, dead lifts, biceps, and abs).

6 miles at an 8:13 pace

We called this our “redemption run”. After a terrible 20 miler last week, we needed a good long run. We did 15 enjoyable miles and only got wet during the last 4 miles. 🙂

Rest day! And a no makeup or shower selfie.

I hope you all had a great week of fitness!

Weekend Snapshots!

6 mile run on Friday. Brooks Pure Flows 4 life. 🙂

Saturday morning long run. After last week’s terrible 20 miler, it was awesome to get in a good-feeling long run. The rain held off so we only got wet for the last 4 miles.

1/2 of an egg and cheese bagel and 1/2 of a chocolate chip bagel. Perfect combo 🙂

Annabelle going to get her horsey after I asked her to go find it. She is so smart. 😉

Sunday eats:

Surprise snow storm?!?!?

What was the best part of your weekend??

I have some advice for you.

Do not attempt a track workout when it’s 30 degrees and VERY WINDY. We wanted to get the workout in and yesterday worked for us…so this meant we had to brave the elements.

The workout:
10-20 min warmup
3 x (2 x 1200 in 5:02)
10-20 min cool down

Our times:
Our 1200m (3/4 mile) times were…

Even though we were supposed to run each 1200m in 5:02, I think we did pretty well in he conditions. BTW, I wanted to quit this workout so bad. I hope this isn’t becoming a trend. :-/

My motivation to finish the workout…office birthday celebration.

I decided to give my legs some extra recovery and I left my compression socks on for the afternoon. I am so stylish.

I left work early and headed to get my hair cut. I didn’t get much length taken off but she cleaned up my layers and it looks soooo much better. 🙂

Before heading home, I stopped at Pei Wei to pick up dinner.

I ordered the steamed vegetables and tofu with brown rice and teriyaki sauce for me and my mom and it was delicious.
Maybe next year right? 😦

This made everything better…

Did you enter the NYCM lottery?

Please tell me something happy about your day! My day has been not so great.

North Carolina, BFFs, and Banana Cream Pie

Last Saturday morning, Annabelle and I flew to North Carolina to visit my BFFs in North Carolina.

Annabelle behaved pretty well on the flight and she had so much fun playing with her seat mate (a nice preschool teacher who got stuck in the middle seat next to us).

Once we arrived, Lauren was nice enough to make a quick stop at Starbucks because I was a walking zombie. I enjoyed an ICED soy vanilla macchiato because it was sunny and in the 70s. It was glorious.

Since it was close to lunch time by the time we got to Lauren’s house, we ate lunch and then headed out to enjoy the weather. We took a nice long walk and made a stop at the playground. I’m not sure how Annabelle felt about the swing, but she was super sleepy so maybe that’s why she doesn’t look thrilled.

Lauren really enjoyed her swinging experience. 🙂

By the time we walked home, AB was out cold.

Lauren and I sat on the porch and talked while eating animal crackers until she woke up. It was really nice to sit and catch up :-).

The rest of the night was spent hanging out…

…and eating ice cream and banana cream pie while watching White House Down (yes, Channing Tatum is amazing). This pie is from Harris Teeter and it is AMAZING. I don’t even like banana flavored things and I am in love with this pie.

Sunday was another fun day!

Breakfast: eggs with ham, red peppers, and cheese with hash browns on the side.

Workout: 7 mile run on a local trail. Lauren, Rob, Mason, and AB went for a walk while I ran :-).

Lunch: grilled chicken, sun dried tomato, and cheese panini with pasta salad on the side.

Dessert (before dinner): we drove to NC State to get ice cream from their creamery. I got cookies and cream and campfire delight…campfire delight = amazing.

BFFs: Mason and Annabelle are great friends. She kept kissing him over and over again. 🙂

Steelers fan? No way! 😉

We headed home on Monday morning and we were sad to go.

Thanks for a great weekend Lauren and Rob! We’ll be back soon!
Where did you go on your last vacation?

Banana cream pie? Yay or nay?

Marathon Training Mondays: #MTM

Yes, I know it’s Wednesday but I’m running behind this week. Please forgive me.

6 tempo miles. 1 mile warm up, 4 miles @ 7:35 pace, 1 mile cool down.

Strength training: Body pump class

5 miles total: track workout.

1600m – 6:46
3200m – 13:59
800m – 3:17
800m – 3:13

Strength training: kettle bell circuit class

20 miles. This.was.TOUGH. I wanted to stop and walk the entire time and every inch of my body hurt when I was finished. I’m hoping the next long run goes better than this one did.

Rest day! Flew to North Carolina to visit my BFF Lauren. 🙂

7.0 mile progression run on a trail in NC.

I hope you all have a great week of training, running, cross fitting, cycling, swimming, napping….whatever it is that you enjoy doing. 🙂

A pretty cool thing to do.

I had big plans to get up super early yesterday morning and head to the gym. Annabelle decided to party from 2 – 3:30 am, so I slept through my gym alarm clock and still felt pretty lousy when my work alarm clock went off. Some days, sleep wins.

Once I got to work, I ate my overnight oatmeal. I am hooked on this breakfast and have eaten it every work day for at least 2 weeks.

During lunch, I went to a farewell gathering for a friend who is moving cross country. He and his wife decided that they wanted a change and they are taking 2 weeks to drive across the country and start a new life near Seattle. How cool is that?

Sandwiches and fruit…

Followed by cookies and a cupcake (cupcake not pictured)

The rest of the afternoon was spent working with my headphones in. Sometimes you just need to tune the office out. I love the Pandora pitch perfect station.

At the last minute, I decided to join my friend Gina for a kettle bell circuit class at our work gym. It was a fun class and we did a bunch of different exercises (squats, swings, curls, overhead presses, more squats, tricep dips) using the kettle bells. I worked up a good sweat and I ended my workout with 15 minutes on the stationary bike.

I made another quick and healthy dinner tonight and I was really looking forward to it because I LOVE sweet potato tots. I sautéed red onions and spinach and added Nature’s Promise Sun Dried Tomato Chicken Meatballs. Served with sweet potato tots on the side, it was the perfect meal.

The night ended with Honey Boo Boo and…ice cream. I think I need an intervention. 🙂

What is the last group exercise class you took?

Have you ever used kettle bells?

Getting soaked twice in one day.

It rained yesterday. It was a cold, dreary day but we still headed to the track for our workout. This was the prescribed workout (week ending with 3/23) and the first time I got soaked yesterday.

These were our actual times, and considering the stinging rain to the face, I think we did pretty darn good. 🙂

1600 – 6:46:30
3200 – 13:59:96
800 – 3:17:47
800 – 3:13:16

It felt AWESOME to actually do a track workout outside instead of on the treadmill. Let’s hope for warm and sunny days from here on out…it is officially Spring now!
Enter second soaking of the day. I didn’t have an umbrella and I had to walk to my car in the rain. I was a very cold and unhappy camper.

I don’t always take selfies but when I do, I make sure they are absolutely terrible.
I made another semi-homemade meal last night and it was quick and healthy. I mixed cooked ground turkey with this…

And served along side a salad.

The rest of the evening was spent playing with AB and watching HGTV with my parents.

This was after our first attempt at bed time… 🙂

Would you rather run in rain or snow?

Freezing cold or very hot??

“Homemade” Pizza with a Twist

Hey guys!  I think I’ve finally found my way of cooking.  I am not very good at making things from scratch and I really can’t figure out how much of an item to add unless someone else tells me to.  I take the “semi-homemade” approach just like Sandra Lee.

Last night, I made this very tasty pizza for dinner and even my dad liked it.  He is more of a pepperoni pizza type of guy. 🙂

“Homemade” Pizza with a Twist

1 store bought pizza dough

1 package of ground turkey (I only used 3/4 of the meat and saved the rest.)

1 jar of salsa

1 handful of spinach

1/4 of a small red onion

3/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese

***NOTE:  These “measurements” are all estimates because I just went off of feel.  Please add as much of each topping as you would like.  🙂

1.  Cook ground turkey in a skillet and season to taste.  I just used salt and pepper.

2.  In the meantime, pre-cook the pizza dough if it calls for it.  The dough I used was pre-cooked for 8 minutes before adding the toppings.

3.  Spread salsa on the crust to serve as the sauce.  I used the whole jar.

Yes, my pizza is oddly shaped.

4.  Add cheese, ground turkey, onions, spinach, and a little more cheese!

5.  Bake until cooked and enjoy!  I baked mine for about 8 minutes.

FACT:  The best way to end a healthy pizza night with the family is to watch Dance Moms and eat a huge bowl of ice cream (bottom layer = cookies and cream, middle layer = double fudge brownie, top layer = strawberry waffle cone…topped with chocolate sauce and cool whip).

Yes, I will be doing an intense track workout today and this is how I properly fuel for my workouts.  🙂

I love Mondays at home.

My work schedule allows for me to be off every other Monday and it is great. Even better is that we have been off because of snow the past two Mondays I was supposed to work. Win win situation. 🙂

I LOVE making breakfast at home, so the day started with stuffed French toast. I finally found The Laughing Cow’s Cinnamon Cream Cheese spread and it made for the perfect filling.

I topped mine with strawberries, blackberries, and agave nectar.

Since the road conditions were not great for running, I headed to the gym for this week’s tempo workout.

1 mile warmup at 9:13 pace
4 mile tempo at 7:35 pace
1 mile cool down at 8:34 pace

I’m not going to lie, this felt TOUGH. My legs were still pretty tired from my long run and it took me about a half of a mile to stop feeling like I couldn’t keep up with the belt on the treadmill.

I finished the workout with a 3 minute plank and a few side planks. Pro compression socks and capris make for the perfect outfit. 🙂

Since I food prepped on Sunday, I ate the lunch I had packed to take to work yesterday.

I REALLY wanted some Cadbury Mini Eggs for dessert, but I controlled myself and had a banana cream yogurt with chocolate goldfish mixed in instead.

The rest of the day was spent doing house stuff and playing with this little stinker. 🙂

My mom came up to hang out with us once Chris went to work. Annabelle LOVES her grandparents. I made grilled chicken salads for dinner and it felt good to eat lots of veggies before I consumed a boat load of ice cream.

If you could be anywhere right this second, where would it be?

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Marathon Training Mondays: #MTM

Hey guys!  So, I unofficially started training for a marathon at the end of January.  When I started, I wasn’t quite sure what race I was training for, but I knew I wanted to run a Spring marathon and I wanted to try and qualify for Boston.  After researching our options, my friend Jeanette and I decided on the Delaware Marathon Running Festival on May 11, 2014!

How did we choose this race?

  1. The Course!  Flat and fast and beautiful scenery.
  2. Location!  Easily within driving distance to cut down on logistics and cost.
  3. Size!  It’s a pretty small race…easier packet pick-up, race morning logistics, getting in the right start position, more room to spread out on the course
  4. Date!  It’s the day after our 5th wedding anniversary and it’s on Mother’s Day…sounds like a great day for a marathon PR and a Boston BQ, right?

From here until race day, Monday’s post will be “Marathon Training Mondays:  #MTM” and I will recap my training from the previous week.  Here we go!

7.0 miles – 2 warm-up miles, 3 tempo miles (7:11, 7;11, 7:07), 2 cool down miles

Strength Training – Body Pump class

6.0 miles – Track workout on the treadmill:  2 mile warm-up, 6 x 400m in 1:37 (repeated 2 times) with a 1 mile cool down.  (P.S. 400m = 1/4 mile)

Strength Training – Body Pump class and 10 minutes on the stationary bike

7.25 miles – 3 mile warm-up followed by 10 x 1 minute pick-ups with 2 minute “rest” in between. My pick-ups were at a 7 minute per mile pace and the “rest” times were at an 8 minute per mile pace.

19 miles at an 8:19 pace – great weather (in the 40s!), challenging, rolling hills.  Great run.  🙂

If you are training for a race right now, tell me how it’s going so far!

If you have any questions about my training, please let me know!
